Algonquin Wilderness School has been in existance since 1983. The founder and first principal, William Harold, envisioned a place where youth who were having trouble dealing with their circumstances could be safe to discover who they are and what they truly want in life. A place where they would be free from the negative influences among their friends and communities, and have a chance to deal with whatever situations their lives have led them into.
Currently the school can take around 50 students from grades 9-12 for a wide variety of reasons including but not limited to: eating disorders, mild personality disorders, ADD/ADHD, OCD, abuse, neglect, rape, self-injury, prolonged grieving or depression, anger and authority issues, petty crimes; issues related to family breakdown, foster care or adoption; or any other issue that will not pose an unusual threat to the individual or others.
Our school curriculum meets provincial standards, with classes in English, Math, History, Geography, Sciences, and the Arts. Wilderness programs, adventure activities, and group discussion sessions play an important role in fostering the emotional growth and self-understanding of each student.
Students are placed in groups of 8-10 students from different levels within the program. There is a male and a female counsellor for each group. Classes are divided by grade, but everything else is done within the smaller groups.
Our staff include teachers, proffessional wilderness therapists, group counsellors, and medical personnel.
